Tuckpointing in Chicagoland

Building houses out of brick and stone is an ideal medium, especially for those who live in hot and sunny temperatures. Over time masonry work will need repairs due to Mother Nature's relentless abuse in both sunny & freezing winter temperatures. Crumbling masonry joints which first appear as an unattractive crack can quickly turn into a disaster; bricks come loose and crumble away, water seeps behind the wall and bees make their homes in the mortar holes. However this is all simply avoided through a process called Tuckpointing

How Is Tuckpointing Done

The general principal behind tuckpointing is that damaged mortar is removed, and is replaced with fresh mortar. Our process involves the following steps.

  • Grounding or routing out the old mortar at a uniform depth.
  • Filling in mortar in the newly routed grooves.
  • Cutting thin strips down the middle of the mortar, to form grooves.
  • Filling in the grooves with a mortar color which matches the original mortar on the outside of the structure.

Benefits of Tuckpointing

  • Corrosion of the mortar joints is stopped.
  • Structural stability is restored. Failing to repair mortar joints will result in a weak structure which will eventually begin to collapse.
  • Tuckpointing helps to prevent water from entering into the system. If the mortar joints are not repaired, water will seep in creating moisture. This can do a serious amount of unseen damage, such as cause mold, mildew, and rotting wood. Moisture can also cause the ceiling and to become stained.
  • Tuckpointing is far more cost-effective than a complete tear-down and rebuild.
  • The value of your home is improved when the masonry is in top condition.
